Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet - Jamie Ford

As I neared the end of On the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, I remarked to my husband that I thought that this was probably one of the most romantic stories I had ever read, and I hadn’t even gotten to the end.

As I finished, I had to maintain my stance. This probably was the most romantic story I had read…because it was about the best kind of romance. First love. Love between two young kids, who are just coming to terms with how unfair life could really be.

At times it seemed as though the book was written just a bit too simply, but that was okay. I still loved it, and for the first time I felt as though I truly grasped what it felt like to be a Japanese American during World War II, and how powerless other US citizens felt about how their American neighbors were being treated. It was definitely one of my favorite reads so far this year.
